Regular Maintenance

The key to longevity with any mower is regular maintenance, how often you carry out these tasks will dependent on how frequently you plan to use your machine.

We demonstrate this on a Winton WFL flail mower roller. After a day of mowing the paddocks grass can get stuck between the roller and scraper and almost always around the roller bearing. Ideally the roller should be cleaned after each use and when covering a larger acreage best practice is to clean the roller before moving onto the next field or paddock.

After the roller has been cleaned is also the perfect time to apply some grease to the bearings. A grease gun and multi-purpose grease cartridge will do the trick, most local DIY shops stock these and we’ve even spotted a few in Halfords.

At the end of the working season or when the mower isn’t to be used for a long period it is good practice to clean off any dirt or grease that may have accumulated on the mower, paying attention to debris which can gather around the moving mower parts.

Further Key Maintenance Tasks

  1. Clean bearings, mower deck and other moving parts as necessary.
  2. Check blades for excessive wear or damage and replace if needed.
  3. Inspect mower for loose, damaged or worn parts and adjust or replace.
  4. Store unit inside if possible to extend working life.
  5. Repaint areas where paint is worn or scratched to avoid rusting.

CAUTION

For safety reasons maintenance must be performed with the tractor PTO disengaged. The machine must be lowered to ground and the tractor engine turned off with ignition key removed.
